How Franz Ferdinand was born??
Contemporary music has many faces. Equally numerous are the many ways of setting up a band. If we exclude all the bands which were created as a result of casting, we will see that the process is lengthy and patchy. Not surprisingly a music band's birth is usually the result of many coincidences through which the band members are gathered together. A great example of this is the history of Franz Ferdinand, a very successful Scottish indie rock band.
The core member of the band is Alex Kapranos, who had gone a long way to success. This half Greek – half English musically talented man had played in many bands, including a jazz band called The Karelia and a Glaswegian rock band called The Amphetaminies. He was in the meantime trying to set a band of his own and organising gigs for young bands in the pubs of Glasgow.
On rare occasions the members of a band may not have previously been on a friendly footing, as was the case with Alex and the Franz Ferdinand bassist, Robert Hardy. Bob, who was at the time a student of the Glasgow School of Art, was a frequent guest of Alex's pub. At first he awakened a feeling of contempt in Alex by telling stupid jokes, but, fortunately for the fans, they soon befriended each other. When Alex gave him an unused bass with a request that he did something useful with it, he unwillingly consented, thus becoming the second member of the future band.
Sometimes one can be lucky enough to have made some acquaintances which can then become useful. The third member, Paul Thomson, had worked in many different places, including being a DJ and a naked-model at the school Bob went to. He met Alex Kapranos when they both played in a Glaswegian rock band called Yummy Fur. When Kapranos set up Franz Ferdinand Paul was meant to play the guitar, but there was however one more member to be found, however, which resulted in Paul switching to drums.
In the story of the band we can also see how an argument can turn into a lifelong, creative friendship. This part of the story is about Nick McCarthy. He was born in England but brought up and musically educated in Munich, Germany. He returned to the United Kingdom a few years ago and went straight to Glasgow to find people to play music with. His first meeting with Alex almost ended in a fight over a bottle of vodka, but on Alex's question as to whether Nick could play the drums, he lied that he did. Soon it was discovered that Nick was much better playing the guitar, so he and Paul swapped instruments and the band was ready to begin songwriting. They very quickly became famous and to such an extent that during a renowned gig at the Glasgow School of Arts about a dozen of representatives from various recording companies showed up.
As the above example shows, setting up a band may be a great adventure, full of unexpected events and strange coincidences which nobody could expect to have such astonishingly positive results. Furthermore, one would only wish to achieve such great success without any professional preparations and casting. Thinking about other brilliant rock bands like my favourites Muse, Mando Diao and Siddharta, I come to conclusion that it is the best way of forming a band.
